Is the road closed: how to check before a winter trip
There is one official source — KazAvtoZhol, the national road operator: the 24/7 number 1403 and the situation map at ru.qaj.kz/s. It shows which stretches of national highways are closed right now, Astana–Karaganda and Astana–Shchuchinsk included.
Check on the day you travel, not the evening before: decisions follow the weather and change more than once a day. When a storm warning is issued, KazAvtoZhol advises postponing the trip outright.

Sapar app
KazAvtoZhol’s app: route planning and roadside services — fuel, food, rest stops.
Navigation apps show closures too, but later: they take the data from the same operator. On a long drive in worsening weather, a call to 1403 beats any app.
What KazAvtoZhol advises before a long winter drive
- Check the forecast along the whole route, not just at the start. If a storm warning is in force, postpone the trip.
- Service the car beforehand and use winter diesel if the engine is a diesel.
- Know in advance where fuel, food and rest stops are along the way: the Sapar app marks them.
- Carry a first-aid kit and fire extinguisher, and in winter warm clothes and water: when a road closes, the wait can happen in the car.

What this means for a booked transfer
While the road is open, the trip goes ahead as planned: the price was quoted individually, fixed when the order was confirmed, and weather does not change it. Book at least 10 hours ahead, and earlier in winter: that leaves room to move the departure if the road closes overnight.
If a stretch is closed, no departure is arranged — that is the road operator’s ban. What happens next is the manager’s call: move the trip or cancel it. The manager is available from 9:00 to 20:00 Astana time, and the published cancellation and refund terms apply.
If a road closes while the car is already under way, the trip pauses until the stretch reopens: nobody is let through a closed highway, and there is no detour across the steppe. What happens next is agreed with the manager.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find out if the Astana–Karaganda road is closed?
Call 1403 — KazAvtoZhol’s single 24/7 call centre — or open the situation map at ru.qaj.kz/s. That is the primary source for all national roads; navigation apps and news repeat it with a lag.
Who decides whether to close a road?
Restrictions on national roads are introduced by KazAvtoZhol together with the road police, based on weather: blizzards, snowdrifts, poor visibility and ice.
What if the road closes before my trip?
Call or message the manager — they are available from 9:00 to 20:00 Astana time. Rescheduling or cancelling is agreed with them; the published cancellation and refund terms apply — cancelling at least 24 hours before pickup is free.
How much extra time should I allow in winter?
More than in summer: snow, ice and limited visibility force a slower pace, and part of the way may be behind snow-clearing machines. If a flight or train follows the drive, leave hours of margin rather than minutes.
Do transfers run in bad weather?
As long as the road is open, yes. If a stretch is closed, no departure is arranged: that is the road operator’s ban, not the carrier’s choice. Nobody drives a closed highway, and this is the case where postponing beats looking for a detour.
Each ride is priced individually; the amount is fixed when the order is confirmed.
